Review of Dominican coffee

Review of Dominican coffee

There is no doubt that the best Caribbean coffee hails from the mountainous regions of the Dominican Republic. Dominican coffee is rich, nutty, and sweetened with notes of tart berries and chocolate. While this coffee is quite unheard of, your taste buds might really miss out on a lot of flavors if you do not give this coffee a try at least once.

A small history of Dominican Coffee

Arabica coffee beans were bought into the land of the Dominican Republic in 1735, which was a bit earlier than Central America. Soon enough, the taste of coffee took its hold on the inhabitants of the country. Today, most of the locals here majorly drink coffee than any other beverage – only 20% of the entire produce gets exported.

Coffee characteristics

Coffee from the Dominican Republic is known for its high acidity content as compared to the softer lower-grown coffees. The body is well-balanced, bold and full. The coffee beans exhibit classic Caribbean tasting characteristics.

Coffee growing areas in the Dominican Republic

There are seven distinct coffee growing areas that have been established by the country’s government. They are Sierra Central, Sierra Occidental, Sierra Sur, Neyba, Noroeste, Barahona, and Cibao. The country is known for having a wide variety of microclimatic differences throughout these regions, which results in coffee beans with different taste and aromatic notes. Before these areas, coffee was grown in designated regions like Bani, Azua, Ocoa, and Juncalito.

The coffee trade here is fairly regulated and the manufacturers deal with coffee brokers and importers from countries like Canada and the United States to get the coffee into the countries for sale.

Coffee growing and harvesting season

The Dominican Republic receives rainfall all year long, which is a climate unlike anywhere else in America. This condition is perfect for cultivating coffee. Additionally, the season is also extended by the arrival of gentle and warm ocean currents and tradewinds that allow the coffee cherry to ripen at a slow rate, which produces a high-quality coffee bean.

Since there is a variety of high-altitude coffee-growing area in the region, the Dominican coffee plants blossom and bloom at different times of the year. This is the reason why high-quality coffee is produced in the Dominican Republic all year long.

Harvesting of the coffee beans is done mostly from October to June. During this season, coffee cherries are harvested by farmers by hand and then dried in large batches. On average, a coffee farm in the Dominican Republic is about eight acres in size. Only organic methods are used to grow coffee crops, including the shade-grown method beneath native macadamia nut trees, guava trees, and pine trees.

Coffee varieties in the Dominican Republic

Over 90% of the coffee beans from the Dominican Republic is the Typica coffee plant. The rest 10% consists of beans of the Arabica varietal like Mundo Novo, Caturra, Catuai, and Bourbon. The Mundo Novo is a hybrid of the Caturra.

Overall, Dominican Republic definitely cultivates unique coffee plantations, thanks to its favorable climatic conditions and terrain. Only organic methods are used to grow coffee crops. The taste of the coffee is unlike something you ever tasted before!

Coffee Kopi Luwak

The most world’s expensive coffees are the Kopi Luwak. The strange method of producing this coffee is the major factor making this coffee very costly. The coffee is usually made from some coffee beans that are already digested by an Indonesia animal like cat that is commonly known as civet cat or palm civet. This is also the primary reason why the coffee variety is referred to as civet cat or the cat poop coffees.

These cat feces/wastes are collected and processed to finishing to be sold as the famous coffee, Kopi Luwak. The coffee has a very unique flavor profile and other properties. Is value is defined by its scarcity, peculiar production method, high demand, unique taste and actually it the world’s most expensive coffee type.

Pricing of Kopi Luwak Coffee

While a normal cup of cup will go for about two to five dollars in just an ordinary coffee shop, the kopi luwak coffee goes for about 35 to 100 dollars per cup at a similar shop. Half kilo gram or pound of kopi luwak coffee goes for about 100 t0 600 dollars while average coffee will just go for roughly three to ten dollars per the same amount.

Production of the coffee luwak is about 500 to about 1000 pounds or 250-500kg annually while number one coffee producer in the world Brazil produces averagely 900 tons kg (mio tons yearly).

What’s the big deal with the Kopi Luwak coffees?

The producing process of the coffees makes the big difference. The plant used for producing the kopi luwak coffee is some ever green indigenous of Asia and Africa and tropical evergreen crop. The plant was also, around the 1600s, imported by the Latin America.

The coffee beans are by fact seeds which contain a protection against animals, the caffeine. However, this is immune to the cat known as the civet. This cat belongs to the mammal viverridae family and is a relatively small animal. These animals usually feed on the very ripe coffee cherries in the Indonesian nation. Therefore they like harvest the beans when ripe thus producing good quality coffees. This cat is locally known as the luwak.

Digestion of the coffee cherries

When the cat eats the coffee cherries, the pulp and cherries are digested living only the coffee seeds/beans undigested. The beans undergo some fermentation and thus giving the kopi luwak its great and unique flavor. The cat then removes the coffee beans as feces after about twenty four hours. In the south eastern Asia the feces from this cat are treasures and are usually got from the farmers to be processed as coffee.

The coffees are then washed and dried. They are the pounded to remove the skin go through sorting and finally roasted. Not that this cat is wild and eat the coffees at their own leisure.

Brewing kopi luwak coffee

Kopi luwak coffee is brewed like any other coffee both using French press, espresso or even the pour over and dripping method. However not that to enjoy the most out of the kopi luwak coffee do not use flavoring ingredients such as cream, milk and sugar as you will not be able to get the rich special flavor. Do not kill or cover the taste but rather just enjoy it.

Important to note

It is very important to note that kopi luwak coffee is produced is usually animal authentic and friendly. This suggests that the animal have independently and freely eaten the coffee cherries from the farmers coffee gardens and then produced them as waste. These feces are what the farmers collect in their farms and sell for processing as coffee. Since the coffees attract very high prices though they scarce, the farmers are trying to engineer methods to produce more coffees using UN ethical methods.

Producing fake coffee luwak

Almost more than 70 percent of kopi luwak coffee found in the market is not the genuine kopi luwak or is not a hundred percent pure. Even some Indonesian business people are packaging fake low grade coffee commodities under the banner of coffee luwak and getting good money like 300 dollars per 500 kg coffee.

Use of caged or farmed luwak to produce coffee

Animal harmless coffee seeds are collected on the coffee farms and them collected by the farmers for roasting. However some farmers started to use UN natural method to produce the coffees so as to benefit from the lucrative market. They are no longer concerned about the quality coffee produced naturally but the money coming from selling the coffee beans.

For this reason the coffee farmers have found several civets and domesticated them feeding them on the coffee cherries so that they can out put it as feces. This is an animal enslaving activity and actually does not produce the high quality coffee produced from the wild cat. Since these animals are wild, they fight when closed together in one place and then they eventually scum to death owing to distress to be wild again.

Quality of wild versus the farmed civets

Traditionally the luwak animal only fed on the best and ripe coffee fruits and are of course produce the pest coffee quality with automated filters. On the other hand the coffee produced from the caged civet cats is not from the best coffee cherries but the offered to the cats by the farmers to fight hungry.

Wild civets fetch and choose the coffee cherries from a bush like environment which offers more variety as compared to the domesticated where they sought just from a few in a container offered by the farmers. Most of the times the cats do not feed on anything else apart from the coffee fruits since this is only what the farmers feed them.

Where coffee luwak is produced

This variety coffee is fetched from the coffee growing regions in the country of Indonesia especially the nihuta in Lintong and north of Sumatra Island. The coffee is from the Arabica beans and is good quality. The coffees are collected from the coffee plantation owners by a small farmer’s organic coffee organization in the region.

Coffee in Indonesia

Indonesia is a country made of very many islands. The country produces both the coffee Arabica beans together with coffee Robusta. The Arabica beans specialty bean is grown in the Sumatra region though other regions like java and Sulawesi also grow coffee.

Coffee processing in Indonesia

Coffee in Indonesia is processed using the semi washed processing method famously known by the name ‘giling basah’. This method is referred to as wet hulling and almost all the coffee beans produced in this islands country is produced using this method. This highly contributes the coffees flavor profile of beans from Indonesia.

The coffee cherries are dried while on the bean for a short period before they are washed then de-pulped. This helps the coffee to extract the coffee the fruity sweetness and properties.

Major coffee growing regions in Indonesia

Sumatra

This is the region which harvests their coffee before all other regions in the country owing to the fact that it is located in the north-west region of the country. The main areas that produce the high end quality and specialty coffee beans include Mandheling, Aceh and Lintong and all this are located in Sumatra northern region.

Along the lake of Toba is where the Mandheling coffee is usually produced and is among the world’s deepest lakes. The region produces the most complex, syrupy and spicy coffees of which it is popular. Lintong coffees are usually grown also along the lake but to the south-west region. The coffees from this region are very revered for their earthy profile. The area has one of the best specialty coffees in the Sumatra coffees and the whole on Indonesia.

To the north- most regions is Aceh and is also popular as Gayo. The coffees are grown near the Tawar Lake and these coffees are well known for being least complex and cleanest with fine acidity tones and also less body. The coffees are usually harvested in the period of November to march and are typically available in the month of April.

Majority of the Sumatra coffees are usually processed using the wet and hull method which Indonesian tradition. However some of the local people use the sun drying method to process their coffees. The coffee processed using this method is commonly with strong fruity flavors and complex with very strong juicy taste.

Java coffee beans

Java is the Indonesian capital besides being a major coffee growing island. The region is also famous for being the ancient coffee producer in the country. The coffee crop was introduced in the year 1699 by Dutch colonial rulers and has been a coffee producer till today no wonder the coffee being referred to java.

Coffee production in this island is faced with roya, coffee berry disease which is form of fungi in form of rust affecting the crop leafs in the late 19th century. This is the reason that coffee farming was reverted from the island low lands to the highlands which was actually some plateaus. This led the region to producing the world’s quality coffee which is high grown and high quality Arabica beans.

Majority of coffee producers in java are state plantations though the small scale private farmers are also joining the industry fast and this means more varieties from the region and more yields. Sulawesi coffee are harvested between June and October and are typically available in the month of September

Vast of the coffees produced in java are processed using the traditional method also known as wet hulling. This gives the beans a syrupy body, low acidity and composite body. Coffee from Sumatra and Java are almost similar in flavor only that Java coffees are more sweeter and cleaner while the Sumatran are more earthy and spicy.

Sulawesi coffees

The region was originally known by the name Celebes. The region grows the highest grown coffee in the country. Majority of the coffee crops are grown in the Toraja region which is the south most part of the island. Sesean Mountains bisects this region where anciently the coffees produced in the west side normally goes to the market of Sapan while those to the east the minanga town market.

Today the coffees are combined with the best quality coffees being market as Sapan-Minanga. These coffees are strictly high grown, usually up to 2000 meters above the mean sea level and best quality offers the most clean and smoother Indonesian coffees.

Sulawesi coffee are harvested between May and November and are typically available in the month of august all the way to September

They are characterized by low acidity and syrupy body but not as earthy as the java and Sumatra coffees. Since they are high grown they are very dense which makes them stand dark roasting well without losing their special flavor.

Bali coffee beans

Harvesting period of coffee in Bali is usually from May to October and the coffee beans are typically available in the duration between august and September. The region grows some among the best Indonesian coffee. Majority of the coffees grown here is produced between Agung volcanoes and highlands of Kintamani. The volcanoes are active thus keeping the soil very fertile with volcanic ash and very fresh. Sabuk Abian is a traditional organization for the regions coffee farmers and is based on Hinduism. Like other regions in the country wet hull method is used to process the coffee beans though sometimes some farmers use the sun drying method or the wet processing. The coffees from this region are characterized by high acidity than the rest of Indonesian coffee with sweet citrus notes like those of oranges. The coffees are also sweet with chocolate like flavor.

Other coffee growing areas in the region include East Timor and Flores. However, the major growing regions and very popular are the Sulawesi, Sumatra and java region.

Roasting Indonesian Coffee

Since the Indonesian coffees are high grown they are dense enough to withstand high temperatures for longer periods. For this reason the best roasting method in dark roasting which best brings out the rich Indonesian coffee flavors. Some Indonesian coffee producers do not own their own roasting equipment and thus depend on commercial roasters. For this reason they have to supervise the whole process to ensure they get the good quality beans that they took as green beans after being roasted.

During the roasting process the moisture content contained in the green beans vaporizes making the coffee been coming from the roaster lighter. Coffee that is roasted on low temperatures for very long periods usually has baked taste while those over roasted are usually burnt and contain industrial added flavor. Roasting should be done by experts and stopped at the right time to ensure the true coffee flavors are not murdered.

For brewing coffee is usually ground. It is good to note that the best cup of coffee is got from freshly roasted coupled with freshly ground coffee beans to maximize n the richness of flavor and aroma.

Brewing the Indonesian coffees

French press

French press is an advancement of the open pot traditional method. Since a paper filter is not applied in this method, coffee produced has the volatile oils contained in the coffee beans. This method therefore delivers the best coffee flavor unlike the dripping method where the filtering paper removes some of the flavor from the coffees and also adds some additional taste. Coffee brewed using this method is ground coarsely but fine enough so not to pass through the filter holes.

It is important to note that Indonesia exports almost all its good quality coffee beans to other counties like Europe. The coffees are processed and imported back to the country with the most revered world class labels with really expensive prices.

Coffee in Ghana

Ghana is a country located in the African sub-Saharan. The country is bordered by like four African countries among which Ivory Coast one of the African coffee producing countries. Coffee growing was introduced in the mid-18th century in the country. The country is very popular for being the 2nd largest cocoa producing country in the whole world.

Though coffee growing is a small sector in Ghana, the industry is increasing noticeably due to the government effort to make the country recognized as a major coffee producer in the world. The country mostly produces the caffeinated Robusta coffee owing to the fact that the country have very low altitudes the highest being 400 meters above the mean sea level which is very low compared to the 1200 plus meters above the mean sea level required for quality production of the Arabica beans.

Conditions for growth of coffee plants

The country has warmer climates characterized by desert winds which brow from the south to north of Ghana giving the country hot days and cooler nights. The cooler nights are essential for delayed coffee ripening contributing to the fruity coffee flavor due to the coffee bean having greater period of interaction with the fruit cherry.

Since the altitudes are low with the highest being just 400 meters, Robusta beans do well in these elevations. However the country is not suitable for the high grown Arabica coffees. The country also receives ample rainfall needed for coffee growing with good soils and moderate varying temperatures.

Future of coffee growing in Ghana

The country have set a rehabilitation coffee program that is meant to increase the yields of coffee in the country. The country is targeting to double their produce up to about 10 000 coffee metric tons by the year 2021 (ten year project). The government has put under their management 5,000,000 coffee crop seedlings which are to be distributed to the farmers for free. The seeds are early maturing seedlings and high yielding and are expected to help the country achieve more yields in coffee.

In the year 1997 to 1998, the country harvested around 10 000 metric tons of coffee beans though this was short lived for a small period. This was due to negative pricing policy and price fluctuation in the global market. Ghana is also focusing at achieving a yield of about two to three tons of coffee beans every acre and achieve 100 000 hectares of coffee by the year 2020. With this goals the country wishes to achieve about 200 000 metric tons by the year2030.

Green coffee farming in Ghana

In the year 2006 the country worked hard and achieved 3 000 coffee metric tons annually with extension of acre coverage of coffee to about 5 000 acres. The country again achieved the targeted ten year coffee production doubling by achieving 6000 tons annually by the year 2015. This is a sign that the coffee industry in Ghana is subject to succeeding and it is possible to achieve the 10 000 or more metric tons of green coffee beans by the year 2021. The country is not only having their coffee yield go high but also working on their infrastructure to ensure that coffee production reaches the market more efficiently.

The country focuses to be in a coffee competitive position in the globe market where the country aims at selecting their good quality coffees and setting the in the competitive market in the United States, Europe, Australia and Canada so as the world can consider the country a serious coffee producing nation.

Coffee variety grown in Ghana

The country specializes mainly in the Robusta coffee beans which are often regarded as low quality beans compared to the Arabica coffees. The country lacks the required conditions to produce Arabica beans especially in the elevations. The country’s highest peak is 400 meters above the mean sea level which is significantly low as compared to the 1200 and above meters elevation required for growing the coffee Arabica beans. Robusta coffee does well in this low elevations and thus automatic coffee choice for the country.

Coffee processing

The method used for processing the Ghanaian coffee beans is through natural or sun drying. The coffee drying processing stage is very vital at shaping the quality of the final coffee in the cup so it has to be done with much care. The goal of drying the beans is reducing the content of moisture present in the coffee cherries. Processing is done immediately after picking the coffee beans and is usually out doors on thin mats or on concrete/other drying methods.

To ensure the coffee beans are evenly dried they are turned using rakes. This drying method usually takes two to four weeks depending on the sun shine intensity. The coffee cherries are then placed in hullers when the pulp show sighs of peeling off for de-pulping. The farmers then carefully pick the unwanted things from the hulled coffee beans.

Regions where coffee is produced in Ghana

Though the country is major cocoa producer in the world, coffee production can be more lucrative in the country. This is argued from the point that cocoa require rainfall amount ranging from about 1200 to 2000 rainfall amount in millimeters while coffee can grow at an average rainfall of 1000mm without being supplemented with irrigation.

Coffee growing regions in the country include; Volta, Wenchi, Jamasi, Dambai, Drobo, Atetubu, Kete Krachi, Techiman, Nkoranza and Benchem.

Coffee production in Ghana

Coffee farming consist both of small scale and large scale producers. Small scale produces about 960 kilograms per hectare while the large scale producers produce up to 1.5 tons per hectare. The government is initiating a program where the small scale farmers are educated on high yield production in a small piece of land and also advanced farming methods together with financial support

Coffee brewing for Ghanaian beans

These high caffeinated coffees are best brewed using a lot of sweetening to deal with the bitter taste of the caffeinated beans. This includes use of condensed milk, sugar and ice to top up the flavor of the coffee.

Coffee in Congo

A coffee growing in Congo like all other things in the country is faced with a lot of challenges for a lot of decades due to political and civil war turmoil. This has resulted to lack of infrastructure and social inequalities. Coffee farming has moved from the large plantations cad labor intensive common in colonial government to small scale farming. The small farms, the majority of coffee producers today in DRC Congo own farms of about 100 crops.

Flavor and taste profile of the Congolese coffee

Coffee beans from Congo usually have a sweet taste with heavy and full body. Since the beans are grown at high altitudes, they are high grown and dense meaning they can stand high temperatures when roasting and thus suitable for dark roasting. The flavor profile is similar to Burundi and Rwandan coffee beans and shares the same conditions for growth.

Common flavor for these beans is notes of citrus and dark fruits like the berries and plums with live, bright and light acidity. The aroma is pleasant and chocolaty like.

Production of coffee in Congo

Coffee firms are mostly found in the eastern region of the country and have for long sustained the industry. The region is characterized with good rainfall, high altitudes, good variety and deep rich and fertile soils which are just the perfect conditions for coffee growing.

Punitive coffee and other agriculture taxes on the exported goods Congolese coffee beans have found their way in the counties bordering it in this case Rwanda and Uganda. The coffee is packed and re sold to other countries without any evidence to have originated from the country. However recently, these have stopped.

The international community together with coffee specialty industry has given a revisit to coffee production in Congo. There has been significant investment in the processing coffee stations, washing stations. This has in turn helped the farmers produce high quality coffee together with farmer training on how to grow quality and quantity coffees.

Interesting things to know about Congo coffee

  • Coffee is grown at elevations of about 1400 to 2000m above the mean sea level which is characterized by deep and rich fertile volcanic soils.
  • The major coffee growing region in Congo is Kivu and is characterized by both ample rainfall and sunshine with moderate temperatures which are good conditions for coffee growing.
  • Congo mainly specializes in growing coffee Arabica, bourbon variety which is a very high end coffee bean and also specialty coffee.
  • The coffee beans in Congo are usually processed using the washing method and then dried out on sunshine. The coffees are also de pulped using the natural drying process.
  • Congolese coffee beans are characterized by a sweet flavor with notes of dark fruits such as plums, berries and raisins and citrus hints
  • Another thing to note about the Congolese coffees is that they have citric and bright acidity with full body. The aroma is chocolate like and sweet.

Coffee crops growing regions in Congo

Coffee is mainly grown in the three Kivu provinces namely, North Kivu, South Kivu and Maniema. This region is vast and bounders Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. This region also borders mount Ruwenzori and Lake Tanganyika.

Green coffee from Congo

Production of coffee in kivu has rapidly grown in the recent years with the region producing about 960 tons of coffee annually though just a point of the global coffees. More washing machines have been bought to facilitate washing of the coffee cherries.

Getting quality and premium coffee from Congo is somehow not certain. The country is land rocked and depends on the Kenyan port to ship their coffees abroad via counties like Uganda. When coffee from Uganda may take just up to fourteen days to reach the Kenyan port for shipping in Mombasa, the Congolese coffee will take almost two months. Sometime the country may need to bribe the border officers to get their coffees through Uganda boundary and again through the Kenyan boundary. This makes it uncertain on the consistency of coffee exporting from the country.

Quality of Congolese Coffee Beans

Though they are not popular in global specialty market the beans are high end quality like other east Africa coffees. The processing of the beans is done carefully from the picking until they are ready for market. The method of harvesting is usually by hand picking which ensures only the good beans are picked. Floating sorting out is carried on to separate the beans with density. The denser the coffee beans, the good quality they are. Processing by washing machines ensures the beans are clean processed and the quality is preserved.

Processing of Congolese coffee beans

The major processing method of coffees in Congo is through machine washing to forcefully remove the pulp from the coffee beans. The coffee cherries are de-pulped after harvesting then fermented through drying for almost 12 hours. These beans are the dipped again in water for twelve to fourteen hours. After this they are floated in water to separate them with density prior drying on tables.

Roasting the Congo beans

Dark roasting- Congolese coffee beans are dense enough to stand dark roasting without losing it rich flavor but rather boosting it. Coffee made with Congo beans which are dark roasted is usually smooth with smoky and nutty properties together with hints of fruits and citrus. The acidity is bright coupled with full and heavy body flavor.

The beans can also be medium roasted though not very suitable for light roasting.

Brewing Congolese beans

You can either have an immersion or dripping method. French press if highly preferred as it does not contain a paper filter to remove the oily characters of the coffee. This method also well highlights the rich Congolese flavor as well as the aroma.

Coffee in Burundi

Coffee was grown as a cash crop during the Belgium colonial rule in Burundi. The coffees were often exported back to the European country or other colonies that the country had. The Burundi people were then restricted to plant just a particular number of crops and paid peanuts for their hard work.

Coffee processing in Burundi

Like most coffee producing countries across the globe, coffee in Burundi is produced by small scale farmers with micro plots. The farmers grow coffee in very small lands majority of them being less than an acre. The coffee cherries are usually taken to centralized stations for processing. Getting to single origin bean (single variety or single farm) from Burundi is almost next to impossible and is normally sold as single station coffees.

The coffees are processed with much carefulness and concentration to make sure the quality is not compromised with extensive sorting out, washing and fermentation to ensure consistency in the quality of the coffees. The country’s method of processing is similar to that of Kenya. After de-pulping the beans are dry fermented for about half a day and then deep soaked in water for a period of 12 to 14 hours. The coffees undergo floating process to sort by density of the beans and then dipped in water for more 12 to 18 hours. They are then dried on tables or raised beds.

Coffee production in Burundi

Coffee production in Burundi can be dated back to in the 1930s when it was introduced by colonial government of Belgium in the country. The coffee plants mainly grown here is the coffee Arabica which is also grown in most of the regions countries. About 800 000 families in Burundi depend in coffee growing. Farms are owned by small farm holders with a mean of about 250 crops per individual.

The farmers do not specialize in coffee growing but also have other crops like food crops and also keep livestock. Coffee production in the country has been subjected to civil wars and political instability. However right now the country’s export market coffee is fine and is promising.

Almost 25 million crops of coffee are cultivated in the country where most of it is bourbon and just about 60 acres are with coffee in the country. Farmers averagely own about 50 to 250 trees each. The country grows a few trees of Robusta though a very little percent, almost negligible.

Majority of coffee in Burundi is grown on elevations ranging from about 1250 to 2000 meters above the mean sea level. The specialty coffee that is mainly grown here is the Arabica bourbon. The coffee beans are processed using washing method.

Green coffee producing in the country

Issues in Burundi coffee growing industry

After independence achievement around 1960s, coffee farming was privatized the government being left to just left to intervene for prices and research aid. However this did not benefit the industry as such as the coffee declined in quality and quantity wise not to mention the poor flavor and attracting lower prices. This in turn influenced many farmers to abandon their plants and focus on other income generating activities.

The country also experienced civil wars around 1990s which left the country in almost total damage with it economy in ruins. This greatly affected the coffee industry and at the same time appeared to be a promising income generating source to help the people recover. With a living example, Rwanda their neighboring country, the country saw coffee as a lucrative industry. The opted to have a healthy balance and stable investment between the private and state owned coffee plants. This has helped the tiny nation to recover as a coffee producer with more opportunities and stability.

Another issue that has affected the countries coffee is the potato defect observed in other African countries like Rwanda in small extent and Congo. The beans adopt potato like flavor if affected by this defect and aroma and is undetectable through sight. The researchers are working promisingly to get rid of the defect.
