Coffee was introduced in Malawi in the 1880s by the missionaries. Coffee growing for sale was mostly concentrated in Mulanje and Thyolo regions. Most growers were small scale farmers who owned not more than about 200 coffee trees. Cooperatives were the way to go for the small coffee growers who sold their produce through them. By the year 1946 a general coffee growers cooperative was formed in Malawi to address the issues of the coffee growers. The type of coffee introduced by the missionaries was the Arabica beans.
The farmers from Malawi formed a farmers union known as MZUZU. The organization usually imports stores online and sometimes US gives the green beans from Malawi production label as MZUZU. The shareholders come from 5 regions in Malawi and sells their coffee together.
Malawi coffee tasting
Malawi coffee is generally full body with soft edged taste with soft smooth flavor profile. The Malawian coffee is still in subsections until today made of small shareholders.
The growing regions are in south of Malawi and include; Mulanje, Zomba, Thyolo and Mangoci. The system has very high production input with the yields ranging from two to four meters of the green coffee beans in each hectare. Coffee is firmed through irrigation performed by most estates. Coffee is not normally the major crop in these estates but rather other crops like tobacco, tea and macadamia
Production of coffee from the estates has dropped from about 6700 meters produced in the 90s to about 1000 meters today. Coffee is basically grown in elevations ranging from poo meters above the mean sea level. Today only about five estates are with small holdings in the subsections where there is only one main producer, sable farming. The coffee from Malawi is of fine quality but not yet to specialty market.
Small holder subsections
In Malawi, currently there are about 3000 to 4000 coffee small holders coffee farmers which are divided into six cooperatives. These are
- SOUTH EAST
- MISUKU, MZIMBA
- NKHATABAY HIGHLANDS
- VIPHYA NORTH.
These are the cooperatives from the central, northern and NTCHISI EAST.
All this cooperatives from the sub sections forms the large main cooperative called MZUZU a coffee growers union which have it headquarters in northern Malawi, MZUZU. These sectors produce about 350 to 450 meters of coffee yearly. There are a lot of new crops planting taking place. These sectors have received a setoff numerous donors to support coffee farming for the recent one decade.
Coffee production in the subsections is characterized by coffee trees falling of rapidly due to insufficient production farming products such as pesticides and fertilizers. The MZUZU coffee cooperative coffee of hit coffee specialty market in the world especially in America, Europe and japan. The prices of the Malawian coffee have been consistent in the market. The coffees are grown at altitudes of about 1200 to 2500 meters above the mean sea level.
Challenges of climate change
The coffee growers still face a lot of challenges in terms of climate change. More than half of the crop has been wiped out though colder nights and very hot days, heavy unpredicted rain falls, diseases and a lot of pests associated by the bad weather. A lot of the coffee crop beans have died leaving the farmers to struggle.
Coffee fair trade is used in Malawi to improve the basic local infrastructure by building accommodation and bridges to attract the teachers to the region.
How to roast the Malawi coffee
Light roast: the flavor have hint of fruity, softness or berries. The taste is very sweet with mild acidic character and tastes very clean. The best way to bring out all this flavors is to brew using a paper filter.
Medium roast: this method mostly highlight full bode properties and the great ever sweetness.
Dark roast: produces a fine nice full of flavor product. This method gives an excellent clean and pleasant coffee characterized by great aroma.
Methods used for processing coffee beans in Malawi
Naturally processed- this method becoming a favorite with most farmers since the cost is high for getting water for washed method. This is a naturally way of processing coffee while it is not yet removed from the cherry. Only the floating cherries are removed before drying.
The coffee is very sweet, heavy bodied, complex and smooth owing to the fact that it is dried while still with contact with mucilage (it is sweet). Since it is dried for longer time might have fermented, it is basically among the complex variety while dealing with it. For this reason Malawian have put more effort in terms of time and resources to come up with advanced techniques in order to avert fermentation
Washed- the biggest percent of coffee produced across the globe is processed through washing. The cherry is put into wetting mills and the fruit is forced out using machines and water.
How to brew the Malawian coffee
For a hint it is always good to have freshly roasted and ground beans for your brew. The blend on shelf coffees has poor flavor and aroma and does not represent the original bean. The beans should also be stored in dry and cool environments in air tight packages and away from sunlight.
Things that you should ensure you have when preparing your brew are; spoon, timer, conical burr grinder, French press and vacuum seal vessel. To best highlight the composite flavor of this precious coffee a drip an immersion is preferred. The common methods include pouring over method, automatic drip and the French press (espresso). A cold brew from the Malawian is also fantastic.
