Starbucks is probably one of the companies that are famous worldwide and has a chain of stores throughout the world. Its annual revenue is more than $20 billion each year and has more than 191,000 employees worldwide. After getting popular for selling coffee varieties worldwide, the company began selling other hot and cold beverages, snacks, pastries, and sandwiches. With a focus on the local flavor and culture, the company also began selling ice cream, films, and music, whichever was available locally.
The first retail store of Starbucks opened up in Seattle in 1971 by three friends: writer Gordon Bowker, history teacher Zev Siegl and English teacher Jerry Baldwin. All three were studying in San Francisco and were inspired to sell the best coffee beans and equipment after they learned some tricks of the trade under Alfred Peet, a coffee roasting entrepreneur.
The first Starbucks store was opened in 1971 and sold roasted whole coffee beans until 1976. Soon, they shifted their store nearby and began selling espresso coffee as well in 1986. The very next year, Howard Schultz bought the company from the three owners and began expanding the business by opening new outlets outside Seattle. Till 1989, there were over 46 new stores and the company was roasting close to two million pounds of coffee in a single year.
But later, Schultz began to feel the pressure to start more stores under public pressure. So by 1992, the company had opened more than 135 outlets with the yearly revenues amounting to $72 million. That same year, Schultz put up Starbucks for the Initial Public Offering on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange.
Soon, Starbuck’s market value rose to $271 million. So, Schultz sold 12% of the company for $25 million to raise the revenue needed for doubling its outlets. The company was able to open its first store outside America in Tokyo, Japan in 1996.
Schultz bought Seattle Coffee Company in 1998 for $83 million. In 2003, Starbucks acquired Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia for $72 million. By doing this, Schultz was able to create about 150 stores to work with. The company opened its first store in Russia in 2012. By 2013, Starbucks was operating worldwide with a renewed focus of opening stores in South American and South Asian countries.
After getting popular for selling coffee varieties worldwide, the company began selling other hot and cold beverages, snacks, pastries, and sandwiches. With a focus on the local flavor and culture, the company also began selling ice cream, films, and music, whichever was available locally.
From selling roasted coffee beans in 1970 to having a net income of more than a billion dollars, Howard Schultz has contributed significantly to the aggressive growth rate to reach where it is today. Starbucks has experienced a growth rate of 38% in 2012 and has not shown any signs of slowing down at all.
