Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnam is the second largest coffee producer and exporter in the world. The country mostly produces the Robusta coffee variety which is characterized by a bigger degree of acidity than the Arabica coffees. Coffee was first introduced in Vietnam around 1857 by the French. The industry greatly contributed to the Vietnam economy since the early 1900s.

The industry initially started as plantations and become a major country’s economic force. The Vietnam War greatly affected the coffee industry but rose again to be the second biggest farm product after rice exports in the country.

Though the country is a major Robusta coffee producer in the world, some tension in both the global and the local issues have greatly challenged the industry. This includes environment degradation and social equalities which the government is tried to develop mitigation measures to deal with them.

Coffee production in Vietnam

Coffee plantations in Vietnam are mainly grown in the highlands around the central region of the country and accounts for about 80 percent of the total coffee. About 97 percent of the total coffee produce in Vietnam consists of Robusta coffee beans while only three percent is Arabica.

Dalklak province accounts for almost 43 percent of the total coffee produce in the country with Gia Lai and Lam Dong accounting for about 41 percent together. Vast of the coffee crops are grown to the south with Robusta accounting for almost a hundred percent of the total production. The Arabica coffee beans are mainly grown along the north region and partly in Dalklak and Lam Dong.

Most of the coffee producers in Vietnam are small medium and small scale coffee producers with small farms mostly not more than 50 hectares. Just 5 percent of total Vietnam coffee is by large scale farmers with about 500 and above hectares of coffee usually vinacafe state owned group.

Flowering of coffee

Coffee flowering usually occurs between January and February which is just after the harvesting some times after extensive coffee irrigation around the country. Irrigating the coffee cops is to nourish and help the plants recover first after the harvesting.

Flowering can also be favored by rainfall which usually comes after this period. Irregular rain fall causes coffee flowering in individual trees.it takes about six to nine months for the fruits to be produced after the flowering. Ripening rate of coffee cherries may different in the same are or farm and sometimes even the same tree. Vietnam uses coffee farming technologies especially fertilizer which accounts for about thirty to forty percent of the total production cost.

Manual quality coffee harvesting

Harvesting of coffee in Vietnam is somehow labor intensive and is done manually. Strip-picking is usually practiced where only the ripe coffees are harvested after several sessions of coffee picking. Mostly the coffee Arabica are the most harvested using this method especially when the wet processing is to be applied.

The harvesting period usually ranges from November to February. Initially the farmers harvested all the coffee cherries both the unripe and ripe at once though this have changed in time. This is due to the sensitizing the farmers on the advantage of producing good quality coffees.

Processing Vietnams Robusta Coffee

The Robusta coffee in Vietnam is mainly processed using either the natural method or the mechanical drying method. This implies that the farmers dry the coffee beans out in the sunshine or apply mechanical coffee drying technique. The dried cherries are usually stored at homes using plastic bags for selling later. Large scale farms apply a method similar to the one used in Central America where coffees are semi washed.

After picking there are usually a lot of coffee cherries that need to be put to dry and then processed and if the weather remains wet the processing method is interrupted and a lot of coffee may degrade. Growth of coffee production have exceeded the development of advanced processing methods which have led to the coffee from the country being exported without being prepared properly which greatly interferes with the quality of coffee making it inconsistent.

Making an awesome cup of coffee from Vietnamese Coffee Beans

Roasting the Vietnam Robusta coffees can either be medium, light or dark roasted depending on the preferences of the user. For brewing dripping or filtering will serve you the best without over extracting the caffeinated bitter qualities of the coffee.

One of the most famous cups of coffee from Vietnam is iced coffee which is intensively brewed using concentrated coffee dripping into condensed and sweetened milk with ice put in a glass. The coffee is French roasted and medium ground and brewed in a coffee press together with two spoonful of condensed and sweetened milk poured over the ice.

The coffee is creamy, sweet, rich and smooth. The flavor is bold and wonderful.

Step-step procedure on making iced coffee using Vietnamese coffee beans

  1. Put two table spoonful of condensed and sweetened milk into a tall glass.
  2. In the bottom of the coffee press, add two spoonful of the ground coffee small by small coupled with hot water.
  3. The press should be tightly pressed and the coffee well packed.
  4. Pour the hot boiled water down to the coffee press. Cover this with a little rid.
  5. You must be patience because the coffee drips really slowly for about three to five minutes for the brewing to complete.
  6. The coffee gets stronger with time. While the coffee continues to drip fetch some ice.
  7. Stir well when the coffee finishes brewing. Pour this over a glass which is ice filled and take your coffee.
  8. The coffee used for this brewing should not be fine grind as it will fall through the coffee press holes, it should be coarsely medium ground.
