Hard To Find Authentic Coffea Arabica Mocha Coffee from the Haraaz Mountains (Yemen) Medium Roasted Whole Beans 12 oz bag
  • REAL ARABIAN MOCHA COFFEE: Yemeni green beans are imported directly from a family farmers cooperative that grows this specialty coffee high in the Haraz mountains. Expertly 'medium' roasted in small batches in the USA. (roasted February 2018)
  • HARAAZ COFFEE IS TRADITIONALLY FARMED AT AN IDEAL ALTITUDE AND LATITUDE: with the ancient cultivars and the step farming methods of centuries past. The coffee is grown in small family farms on stone-sloped terraced mountains which are 8,000 feet above sea level and in a warm climate near the equator. Ideal conditions for a dense, aromatic and flavorful bean.
  • NATURALLY ORGANIC: with the isolation and lack of infrastructure in the mountain region and instability of the region, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are not available for use - the coffee is traditionally grown and hand picked.
  • NATURALLY DRY PROCESSED COFFEE: the beans are sun-dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit has been removed, as is the case with wet-processed or "washed" coffees using a precious (and in Yemen, scarce) resource and pollute the water.
  • THE CENTRAL YEMENI MOUNTAIN COFFEE FARMERS ARE RENOWNED FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL, UNIQUE COFFEE: Haraaz coffee is a particularly refined example of its type.

Yemen Coffee

Yemen and Ethiopia the home of coffee are found across from each other via the oceans. Coffee has been grown in Yemen for very many years. Yemen even suggests that coffee really originated from there. Sufi monks were the very pioneers of coffee growing around 1450 and even brewed the coffee. Since then the religious monks spread their knowledge for this special drink who also adopted it.

The country remained a coffee monopoly for long (for centuries) where Al Mokha was coffee market hub center. Though the country served as coffee majors for long the industry have since then declined due to coffee growing spreading all over the world and its surplus increasing daily. The down fall has also been attributed to civil issues and disease epidemics.

Yemen coffee profile

Coffee beans from Yemen are commonly referred to as the Yemen mocha. The name means Yemen classics which are grown organically. The beans are usually characterized by earthy, complex and full bodied flavor.

Yemen coffee beans are very winey and rich in acidity with notes of raisins, cinnamon and spices and a finishing of chocolaty tones. The coffees can also have tobacco, woody or earthy overtones. The outstanding quality of the Yemen coffee is the chocolate flavor which has influenced people to add chocolate to their coffees to imitate the Yemen coffee.

Coffee production in Yemen

Vast Coffee plantations in Yemen are considerably small. The farmers harvest their coffees through handpicking where the pick cherries from some ancient type of coffee Arabica that extends on the highland areas. The region is micro-climate and grows some drought resistance varieties of coffee plants. The coffees produce very distinct coffee beans with intense chocolate flavor with some degree of complexity.

The harvesting period in Yemen is November to December. The main processing method is through sun drying which is mainly done on farmer’s houses roof tops. The pulps and waste cherries are utilized in making cascara (gishr).

Reviving Yemen coffee

Coffee industry in Yemen has been known to go down greatly and some advanced developments have been adopted to help it back to its feet. A young man, Mokhtar Alkhanshali created a company by the name Mokha port and also done measurable research on the declining coffee industry in Yemen. One of the key objectives he had is divert his countrymen from growing unsuitable crops like Khat and return to coffee growing.

The young fellow brought back sustainable coffee sustainable farming practices and encouraged the farmers to farm quality products through providing training to them. The company was even boosted further when Blue Bottle put their blue label on their coffees. This has helped very much to revive the coffee industry in the country since the coffees with the blue label are quite expensive.

Coffee growing regions in Yemen

Hirazi coffee beans

This is situated to the wet of the country and west of Sana, a capital a pair of mountain ranges from the capital. Coffees from this region are usually winey in acidity with fruity and light flavor.

Sanani coffee beans

This is a variety that is a combination of crops grown in the areas to the north of Sana. The variety consists of low grown coffees which may be of a lower grade. The flavor of this coffee is well balanced with medium body, fruity tones and lesser acidity than the rest of the countries coffees.

Ismaili coffees

Consist of the few coffee which are produced from ancient trees and Ismaili is the coffee variety name. The coffee produced by this plant is high quality and similar to pea and it is berry like and bright. It is not clear whether the coffee tree is called Ismaili or just the region.

Civil wars together with diseases such as cholera have greatly brought down the industry. The country is also regularly attacked by some rebels making life unpredictable and for this case coffee growing. Some individuals are working hard to revive the company.
